Who is/was your biggest inspiration in the kitchen ??

I dont know if this topic has already been done but I thought it would be nice to see who gave us the cooking frenzie..!

As far as I'm concerned, I'd have to say MUM... I always remember being in the kitchen even as a small kid watching everything she was doing... taking notes sometimes and asking too many questions other times!!! (when it got to the stage when she couldnt remember whether she'd put the seasoning in or not, I would normally find myself being kicked out from the kitchen because of yapping too much...! lol  lol  lol )

However, it's by watching her that I learnt a good few tricks... and ended up being the most popular neighbour on the college campus when in Uni... I suddenly had a lot of friends popping over for a bite to eat... (you know, the ones who only know how to boil the water for the pot noodles!!)..

I sometimes want to get a few recipes off her but she's not giving them away that easily mind you... so we're trading recipes...!!  roll

Well it definatly wasn't my mother as she could burn even a saucepan of milk and we frequently used to see the pressure cooker spouting out a gyeeser where she had forgotten to put the little weight back on top!

My mother used to be a big fan of the ' Galloping Gormet'  and **** Craddock who used to always have her husband Johnny in tow ! but even watching them did not inspire her in great culinary skills  lol

My father was by far the better and more adventurous cook, I learned a lot from him and above anything I learned that you need not always follow a recipe to create a good meal. (It is rare for me to follow a recipe!)

My father was always keen to try new foods and would grow all sorts of strange vegetables that he would then cook.

I was inspirered by my father as well. He was far more adventurous in the kitchen than mom.

Dad developed an interest for food and wine at an early stage so I was lucky enough to be traveling all over France,Italy and Germany in search for a good meal and wine when I was very young.

My mom's cooking is more traditionel Norwegian stuff that I am not too excited about. I am the one teaching her stuff now and she normally begs me to cook for her when I'm home! big_smile

But the funny thing is that it took her a long time to admit that I'm a better cook than her! lol

My inspiration came from some of my aunts! My Mom cooked good meals but you could tell she didn't like to cook!!  Some of my aunts treated cooking as an art and I enjoyed watching them.

Re: Who is/was your biggest inspiration in the kitchen ??

thats a good question, i've never really thought about it.

it is because of my dad that i'm a chef tho i never intended to be. my headmaster was always asking us for a career decision in our last year at school and i never knew what to say, my dad said that as i enjoyed cooking why didnt i just tell him i wanted to be a chef to shut him up. after that whenever anyone asked i said i wanted to be a chef and eventually i even convinced myself. dont get me wrong ive no regrets but my 1st choice wouldve been the film industry, bad career advice at school, or lack of it meant it didnt happen.

as for inspiration ive always enjoyed reading about food, via books, magazines and internet and most of my inspiration comes from there.
most of my books are jamie's and he's definitely influenced me in terms of ingredients and style, but professionally i'd have to say gordon ramsey. his kitchen nightmares series is a fantastic reminder of how standards and motivation can slip below par and he always demands the highest standard in every aspect of his work.

so jamie, gordon, dad, books et al, i thank you.

Re: Who is/was your biggest inspiration in the kitchen ??

My old head chef, John Dalby of the blue lion, East Whiton, back in 93/94. I has worked in kitchens for a couple of years but didn't really grasp the art/science of cooking. At the Blue Lion i was cooking to a really high level, with knowledge rather than following a set of instructions about something or other. it was the first time that i understood the basic concepts and the diversity of what one can do in a kitchen. He was a bit a b*stard, i'm sure i got bolikings just for the sake of it. the knowledge/skill/passon remain with me today as i slog it out night after night in the domestic kitchen for the Mrs. As for 'TV' chefs, Heston and Floyd would be my choices: Heston for his unrivalled knowledge and ability and Floyd for his flawless ablity to throw it together, whilst on the lash in some trpoical location.

My Mother was a great cook, but she passed when I was very young so I didnt learn much from her. People still talk about her dinner parties.

I learnt from an elderly neighbour & a friend of mine that is about 15 years older than me & is from Italy.

But I think the fact that people now compare my love of cooking to my Mum's is probably the biggest inspiration.

MUM MUM MUM here 2

Mum lit my fire for cooking and have had many TV chefs keepin it burnin.

Oh and of course my own flair for flavours but that goes right back to MUM.
We had all sorts of "international" dishes, Mum worked in a chinese restaurant and at my Grans pub, we had Italian friends and of course my godmother was Indian. So I got the taste for fancy stuff early on. thumbsup

Definatly my mum and my grandmother (mum's mum) both are really good cooks and have a passion for it. My grandma always cooked beautiful traditional farmhouse food (being a farmer) and we had many wonderful lunches there after spending the morning working or running around in the fields. And christmas we all baked cookies together.
My mum was very traditional in her cooking when I was very little but later discovered many different types of cooking eg Italian, Asian etc and got quite adventerouse.
Even now my mum is a great inspiration for me, but now I sometimes cook new thinks she really likes and then tries out herself.
Another inspiration is my boyfriend, as we both really love cooking we do most of it together and with our different backgrounds we learnt much from eachother!
